The Palms Rehabilitation Department of the Ministry of Health hosted a special event observance in recognition of World Physiotherapy Day 2025 at the Cara Lodge Hotel.
This year’s global theme “The Role of Physiotherapy and Physical Activity in Healthy Ageing, with a Focus on Preventing Frailty and Falls”, set the tone for a program aimed at promoting awareness and action around preventative care for older adults.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Ariane Mangar, Director of Rehabilitation and Disability Services, underscored the critical role of physiotherapy in fall prevention, particularly among the elderly population.
“We all know someone who has had a fall. For some, it’s just a scare, but for many, especially older adults, a fall can result in a loss of independence, hospitalization, or even long-term disability. Falls are not just accidents, they are preventable.
Physiotherapy is central to that prevention,” she stated.
Dr. Mangar also reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s commitment to expanding access to rehabilitation services throughout all regions of Guyana. She emphasised practical strategies to prevent falls, including safe and appropriate exercises for seniors, maintaining hazard-free home environments, proper use of mobility aids, and early intervention when mobility begins to decline.
The event brought together healthcare professionals, families, and community representatives, fostering dialogue and collaboration on ways to promote healthy ageing and improve the quality of life for all Guyanese.
