- Health Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Health Transformation
Aranaputa, Lethem — The Ministry of Health today recommissioned the newly rehabilitated health post in Aranaputa, Annai Sub-District, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). The upgraded facility, which underwent major rehabilitation and furnishing, represents a $12.5 million investment aimed at improving health care delivery in the hinterland regions.
The health facility will now provide improved services like general outpatient, maternal child health services and chronic disease management.
Aranaputa Health Post, one of 62 facilities across the region, previously operated in an outdated structure. Following extensive consultations and assessments, $10 million was allocated for comprehensive repairs, with an additional $2.5 million invested in high-quality furnishings and equipment.
“Across the region, we are seeing significant development—not just in health, but in many sectors. This upgraded facility is a clear example of how we’re prioritising the well-being of our communities,” the Minster of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony said.
The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to continuous infrastructure improvement, ensuring that all facilities meet high standards of care.
He also acknowledged the growing demand for resources in the region, a sign of the increasing expansion of healthcare services.
“We’re not only focused on buildings,” the Minister continued. “We’re investing in people. More training opportunities are now available locally for community health workers, nursing assistants, microscopists, pharmacy assistants, and others. This allows us to train and employ more people, faster”.
Previously, healthcare personnel had to travel to Georgetown for training, limiting the number of trainees. Today, regional training centers can accommodate up to 50 people per batch, rapidly expanding the skilled workforce.
In addition, the Ministry has recently signed a new agreement to offer specialised nursing courses in areas such as critical care and cardiac care.
“Our goal is to create clear career paths, allowing our young professionals to grow within the health system,” the Minister noted.
The Minister urged residents to visit their local health facilities and take full advantage of the expanded and improved services now available.
Meanwhile, Odessa Rodrigues, a resident of Aranaputa, expressed her appreciation to the government for the recent upgrades to the community’s health post.
“Now, when I visit the health post, I can sit comfortably while waiting to see the doctor. The previous building was very old,” she noted.
The recommissioning ceremony was attended by Dr. Cerdel McWatt, Regional Health Officer (RHO); Mr. Bryan Allicock, Regional Chairman; and Mr. Michael Gouveia, Hinterland Coordinator, Regional Health Services.
