This morning, the Ministry of Health received a generous donation of anthropometric equipment from UNICEF, procured under the Canada-Funded Early Childhood Development (ECD) Project. The equipment, which includes infant scales, length and height boards, beam-type scales, and a CTG monitor, will aid in monitoring the growth and development of young children, while providing essential data to help health professionals target interventions for those most in need of nutrition and healthcare support.
In his remarks, Mr Nicolas Pron, UNICEF Representative to Guyana and Suriname, emphasised the importance of investing in early childhood and nutrition interventions as a means to help children grow, thrive, and contribute to their communities. He expressed his pleasure in collaborating with Canada on this impactful donation.
Mr Daniel Bood, Charge d’Affaires of the Canadian High Commission, also spoke at the ceremony, explaining that the donation is part of Canada’s $3 million initiative aimed at promoting safe and healthy learning and living environments. He highlighted the critical role these tools will play in assisting community health workers with assessing the growth, nutritional status, and overall health of Guyana’s children.
Dr Vishwa Mahadeo, Director General of Regional Health Services, expressed sincere gratitude to UNICEF and Canada for their support, reassuring that the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring the effective use of these tools to improve the well-being of children across the country.
Also present at the ceremony were Dr Ertenisa Hamilton, Director of Family and Primary Health Care Services; Mr Glendon Fogenay, Deputy Permanent Secretary Finance attached to the Ministry of Health; Dr Delroy Pyle, PMTC Coordinator and other representatives from UNICEF.
This donation marks a significant step in strengthening Guyana’s efforts to support the health and development of its youngest citizens.
