Today, Dr Nandishaw Ramsingh, Technical Officer for Diabetes Care, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, launched a children’s book titled “Super BJ and His Type 1 Diabetes Adventure”.
The event, held in the Ministry of Health’s boardroom, brought together students, parents, teachers, and ministry officials to mark an important milestone in diabetes awareness and education.
This innovative book, authored by Dr Ramsingh, provides a creative and engaging way to educate children, teachers, and parents about Type 1 diabetes, its management, and the importance of support for children living with this condition.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narine Singh, in his address, highlighted the challenges children face when living with Type 1 diabetes. He commended the resilience of young patients and emphasised the critical role of family and community support.
“Living with diabetes is not easy, especially for children who require lifelong insulin therapy. Yet, with proper care, children can lead happy and fulfilling lives,” he said.
The CMO highlighted that this book serves as an excellent resource for raising awareness and fostering understanding in schools and communities.
Meanwhile Dr Lachmine Lall, Director of Chronic and Non-Communicable Diseases, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting the book’s will create a platform to sensitise schools and communities about Type 1 diabetes.
“This storybook is a gentle introduction to the topic, addressing not just the medical aspect but the social and emotional challenges faced by children with Type 1 diabetes. It encourages inclusivity, understanding, and the integration of support systems within schools and families,” she said.
Dr Lall took the time to remind the audience of the Ministry’s Type 1 Diabetes Programme. She assured families that medical supplies and support are available to ensure these children receive the best possible care.
Also present were, Dr. Dianele Drepaul, Coordinator, Chronic Diseases Unit; Ms. Glenys Beaton, Head of the Guyana Diabetes Association; and Dr. Michael Pereira, Technical Officer for Cardiovascular Care attached to the Ministry of Health.
