Today, at the Ministry of Health’s Brickdam Headquarters, the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, met with Mrs Saskia Fraser-Smith, a representative from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) currently visiting Guyana. The discussions focused on strengthening existing technical cooperation projects and exploring new areas of collaboration to enhance the country’s healthcare system. Also present at this meeting was Ms Petal Surujpaul, Medical Physicist attached to the Ministry of Health.
The IAEA team and the Ministry of Health engaged in productive dialogue on expanding support in key areas, including cancer control, specialised medical training, regulatory frameworks, and emergency preparedness. With the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, the Ministry recognises the critical role of nuclear medicine and radiation therapy in improving diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes.
The Ministry of Health looks forward to continued collaboration with the IAEA in strengthening the country’s medical and regulatory capacity, ultimately improving health outcomes for all Guyanese.
