The Ministry of Health’s National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS) hosted the 2024 World AIDS Day Conference this morning, focusing on advancing a human rights approach in HIV care.
The event brought together healthcare providers, representatives from various health facilities, organisations, NGOs, and other key stakeholders to deepen understanding and collaboration in combating HIV/AIDS.
During his remarks, Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS while addressing ongoing challenges.
“It is essential that we recognise how far we’ve come, but also acknowledge the gaps that remain. A collaborative approach is crucial to ensure equitable access to treatment and to support countries that are lagging behind in meeting global health goals,” he stated.
The Minister called for a shift in the conversation around HIV/AIDS, moving from merely reporting statistics to implementing actionable strategies that drive tangible improvements in health outcomes. He also highlighted the contributions of the dedicated team members at NAPS, whose long-standing efforts have been instrumental in advancing the fight against HIV/AIDS in Guyana.
Dr Tariq Jagnarine, Director of NAPS, echoed the need for a holistic and inclusive strategy to address HIV/AIDS, integrating healthcare with human rights.
He stressed that reducing stigma and improving access to care for individuals living with HIV are essential steps in combating the epidemic effectively.
The conference also saw participation from notable officials, including Ms Adriana Negry Leite Do Egito, Head of the National Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; Mr Adler Bynoe, UNFPA Country Representative; and Dr Shanti Singh, Knowledge Coordinator with PANCAP, among others.
This year’s conference underscores the Ministry’s commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation in the fight against HIV/AIDS, aligning with global efforts to end the epidemic and ensure equitable healthcare for all.
