On Sunday, November 18, the Minister of Health, Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony, joined the World Prematurity Awareness Walk organised by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The event, which brought together healthcare professionals, parents, and community members, commenced at the National Park and concluded with a brief ceremony at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology parking lot.
In his remarks, Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony expressed gratitude to the medical team and lauded their commitment to improving neonatal care in Guyana. He commended the collaborative efforts of GPHC staff and partners like the Pan American Health Organisation/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) in advancing neonatal services.
“We must celebrate the victories we’ve achieved and share the stories of lives transformed through the remarkable work done at this hospital,” Dr Anthony stated.
He highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives to decentralise neonatal services, including the establishment of Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in regional hospitals such as Suddie and Lethem.
“Plans are underway to extend similar facilities to other regions, with Region 8 being the next target”.
Dr Anthony further announced the construction of the country’s first Padetric and Maternal Hospitals along with six new neonatal wards in hospitals across the country by early 2025.
“A new Maternal and Pediatric Hospital, featuring a 256-bed capacity and state-of-the-art equipment, is set to become a beacon of excellence, catering to both local and regional patients” He said.
He also used the time to announce upcoming hospital projects in in Moruca, Region 1; Lethem, Region 9; Kato, Region 8 and Kamarang and Bartica, Region 7.
Dr. Anthony reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to reducing complications associated with prematurity through investments in infrastructure, equipment, and training.
The World Prematurity Awareness Walk served as a reminder of the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving healthcare excellence. It reflected the ongoing efforts to strengthen the health system and improve neonatal care for all Guyanese.
