Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, on Friday, September 19, 2025, attended the inauguration of Guyana’s first Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Clinic at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The clinic was established through a collaboration between the Ministry of Health, GPHC, and the Center for Global Health at Northwell Health (USA).
The introduction of this service marks a historic milestone in Guyana’s mental health sector, offering advanced treatment options for individuals with severe psychiatric conditions such as major depressive episodes, schizophrenia, and catatonia, particularly those who have not responded to conventional therapies.
The event also featured remarks from international and local mental health leaders, including Dr. Sohag Sanghani, Director of the Division of Interventional Psychiatry at Northwell Health, and Dr. Timothy Morgan, Director of Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, both of whom praised the clinic as a major step forward in psychiatric care.
The Ministry of Health remains committed to modernising mental health services across Guyana and ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of evidence-based care.
