The Division of Health Sciences Education of the Ministry of Health and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives today launched the first Midwives Guyana Project at the Ministry of Health Boardroom on Brickdam.
This initiative, titled “Enhancing the Clinical Skills of Front-Line Health Workers”, particularly midwifery and medex students in Guyana, is set to transform midwifery education and practice.
In her remarks, Deputy Director of Health Sciences Education, Chandroutie Persaud, noted that this programme aims to elevate the quality of midwifery training to improve health outcomes for women of childbearing age and their newborns.
“We know that skilled midwives are essential for reducing maternal and infant mortality, ensuring safe pregnancies, and fostering the holistic well-being of mothers and babies. This initiative is not just about training; it’s about investing in the health and future of communities across Guyana,” she emphasised.
Meanwhile, Political Counsellor at the Canadian High Commission, Mr Daniel Boo, mentioned that the Midwives Guyana Project adds to the Government’s initiative to improve healthcare in Guyana.
Among those present were Dr Ronald Lett, Founder of the Canadian Network for International Surgery; Dr Bovell, Executive Member of the Canadian Network for International Surgery; Bhagpattie Ramnarine, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer; Dr Nicola Nero, Nursing Officer at Health Sciences Education; midwives from both private and public healthcare facilities; and other officials.
