The Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Unit, in observance of World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10), is hosting a two-day workshop under the theme “Creating Hope Through Action.”
The workshop specifically targets prison officers from all five correctional facilities across the country. Its primary aim is to equip officers with the knowledge and skills to identify, manage, and appropriately respond to signs of suicidal ideation among inmates.
Through this initiative, the Ministry hopes to strengthen the support available within correctional institutions and create safer, more responsive environments for both officers and inmates.
These sessions are being facilitated by Dr Mark Constantine, Head of Psychological Services at the Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Unit, along with other technical and support staff from the Unit.
This training underscores the Ministry’s commitment to raising awareness, building capacity, and taking action to reduce the incidence of suicide in Guyana.
