The Honourable Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, yesterday met with members of the One Lambda Team at his Brickdam office. He was joined by several representatives from the Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Agency (HOATTA). The One Lambda Team is currently in Guyana for a week-long training session on ‘Human Leukocyte Antigen’ testing at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL). During the meeting, the team shared their progress with the training and expressed their plans to return for future sessions. They were open to Dr Anthony’s suggestion of conducting virtual teaching sessions. Dr Anthony, along with Dr Navindranauth Rambaran, CEO (Ag) at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), took the opportunity to highlight the Ministry’s growing transplant programme. They noted that GPHC now performs around 12 to 15 transplants annually and emphasised that the training provided by the One Lambda Team is an essential step towards facilitating cadaveric transplants, which require regular testing. This week’s training involves medical technologists from the Blood Bank, the GPHC Labortory, and the Molecular Biology Lab at NPHRL, all of whom are benefiting from the expertise shared by the visiting team.
