The Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, attended a graduation ceremony and dinner at Herdmanston Lodge, celebrating the accomplishments of the latest batch of individuals who has successfully completed a programme in Internal Medicine.
While delivering remarks, Minister Dr Anthony highlighted the government’s unprecedented investment in the healthcare sector, with more than $500 million USD dedicated to enhancing hospital infrastructure across Guyana, along with $500 million allocated annually to each Region to improve local health facilities.
“We are in an era of transformation, where resources allow us to improve healthcare infrastructure and train our workforce at a level we’ve never done before,” Dr Anthony noted.
He shared details on new facilities, including a Level 5 hospital in New Amsterdam and the upcoming Maternal and Pediatric Hospital in Ogle, which will feature advanced medical technology, including the country’s first public MRI machine.
The Minister also emphasised the Ministry’s focus on training and professional development, with partnerships established with institutions such as Northwell, Mount Sinai, and McMaster University, to offer fellowship and specialisation opportunities for Guyanese doctors.
Notably, Dr Anthony mentioned growing collaborations in cancer research with MD Anderson Cancer Center, aimed at building local capacity in oncology.
Minister Anthony concluded by outlining the upcoming roles for the graduates, encouraging them to apply their skills at one of the six new hospitals slated to open in 2024, as they play an essential part in Guyana’s evolving healthcare landscape.
