The Guyana Association of Optometrists (GAO) met with the Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony and the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narine Singh on September 3rd at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters in Brickdam.

Representing the GAO were Dr. Michele Ming, President; Dr. Shannon Da Silva, Secretary; Dr. Johan Da Silva, Treasurer and Mrs. Prabha Persaud-Kissoon, Attorney at Law representing the Association.

The Parties discussed potential interventions regarding the updating of Guyana’s Optometrists Act 1956. The GAO also engaged the Minister on the possibility of the Association operating as an independent body that holds the key responsibility for registering qualified optometrists and dealing with matters in this specialised area of the medical profession.

Currently, the Guyana Medical Council handles all registration of new Optometrists and the annual renewal of licenses.
