Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Health attended a Continue Medical Education Session and Dinner hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana.
The events, held simultaneously at Herdmanston Lodge, Queenstown were done to commemorate the foundation’s 10th anniversary.
During his brief remarks, Dr Anthony reflected on the significance of perseverance in the foundation’s journey, noting the organisation’s successes in patient care despite the challenges faced due to historical misconceptions and a lack of data on the disease.
Through collaborations with international partners, the foundation has assisted in providing medications for patients, that were once unavailable.
The Minister informed those present of the potential for future improvements in patient treatment and care through collaboration and resource allocation.
He further explained that the health sector is evolving, with more resources being available for epilepsy care than in the past.
“ We now have persons who can champion this type of change… we can have specialized clinic. We have a little bit more resources than we had previously”, he assured.
Dr Anthony also used the time to emphasise the role of health education in changing perceptions of epilepsy.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These seizures can vary in type and severity, ranging from brief lapses of consciousness to severe convulsions.
