Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, today commissioned the Chesney Health Centre during a visit to Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The facility, built at a cost of approximately GY$39 million, is fully equipped with medical supplies, equipment, and a skilled healthcare team to deliver essential primary care services to the local community.
In his address, Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony emphasised that the health centre’s mission extends beyond treating illnesses, aiming to offer preventive care through regular health checks and guidance for overall well-being. He underscored that this initiative is a key component of the government’s plan to elevate Guyana’s healthcare system to world class standards.
“We want to ensure that mothers can access clinics for regular health checks, ensuring healthy births without complications. Our goal is to eliminate preventable maternal deaths,” Minister Anthony said.
He highlighted the importance of utilising health centres for a wide array of essential services. Stressing the role of vaccines in disease prevention, the Health Minister expressed that the Ministry is providing 18 different types of vaccines to protect children from various illnesses and ensure they grow up healthy.
Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr Vishalya Sharma, also spoke expressing pride in her Region’s ability to consistently deliver equitable health services across communities. She pointed out that the expansion of services and their improved accessibility reflect the dedication of the healthcare staff.
Dr Sharma further mentioned ongoing training programmes designed to strengthen human resources across health facilities.
In closing, the RHO reaffirmed the Region’s commitment to patient care and expressed gratitude to all involved in the development of the new health facility and other key interventions.
The event was attended by Mr David Armogan, Regional Chairman; Mr Shameer Khan, Chairman of the National Democratic Council (NDC); and other officials.
