President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali and Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony on August 02, 2022, turned the sod for a EUR$149 million (GUY$31.9 billion) Paediatric and Maternal Hospital (PMH) at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara.

This modern facility will offer specialised services in the care of pregnant women, mothers, and their newborn babies. Those include prenatal care, childbirth delivery, postpartum care, and sometimes neonatal care for newborns. It will also focus on the health and well-being of infants, children, and adolescents. These hospitals have specialized healthcare professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of pediatric conditions and illnesses.

This Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) health facility will have 256 beds, will cover 24,000 square meters of gross floor areas and will have an imaging suite which will include CT scans, X-rays, and Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning equipment.

It will also be equipped with a modern laboratory which will process and analyse hundreds of samples per day with the utmost efficiency and accuracy. These new facilities will expand the capacity to provide quality healthcare services and bring medical care closer to communities.
