On August 2, 2022, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali, together with the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, officially turned the sod for the construction of a state-of-the-art Paediatric and Maternal Hospital (PMH) at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara. The project represents a significant investment of EUR €149 million (GYD $31.9 billion) in the nation's healthcare infrastructure. The upcoming facility is designed to provide specialised medical services for pregnant women, mothers, and their newborns, including prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, and neonatal services. In addition, the hospital will cater to the health needs of infants, children, and adolescents, offering comprehensive pediatric care delivered by highly trained healthcare professionals. Located in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), the hospital will feature 256 inpatient beds and span a total gross floor area of 24,000 square meters. The facility will be equipped with a modern imaging suite, including CT scan, X-ray, and MRI capabilities, as well as a fully outfitted laboratory capable of processing and analysing hundreds of samples daily with high precision and efficiency. This landmark development is expected to significantly enhance the delivery of quality healthcare services across the region, improving access to specialised care and bringing vital medical services closer to the communities that need them most.
