Health Care Network Strengthening Project Overview

The Health Care Network Strengthening (HCNS) Project is an initiative by the Ministry of Health aimed at expanding access to high-quality health services across Guyana. The project involves the construction of three modern regional hospitals designed to deliver essential health care closer to remote communities. These hospitals will be constructed in Lethem, Region 9; Kato, Region 8; and Moruca, Region 1;

The total cost of construction is approximately $79.7M US. The Lethem hospital will be constructed at a cost of $31.1M US and it will have a total of 90 beds, Kato at $27.4M US, and Moruca at $21.2M US, funded through a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Kato and Moruca will each have 75 beds.

Preliminary designs and management plans are currently ongoing for all three hospitals and construction of Lethem hospital commences in July 2025 with a completion date of August 2027. Construction of Kato and Moruca hospitals commence in July 2025 with a completion date of October 2027.

Expected Services

Each hospital will be a fully equipped, modern facility offering:

  1. 24 hour emergency services
  2. Inpatient wards (ICU, HDU, NICU)
  3. Maternity and child care (Ob/GYN Clinic, Pediatric Unit)
  4. Two modern operating theatres and one minor operating theatre
  5. Laboratory and diagnostic imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, CTs)
  6. Outpatient and specialist clinics (asthma care, diabetic care, audiology, physical therapy, dentistry, etc.)
  7. Pharmacy services

This investment is part of the Government’s commitment to delivering equitable, modern and sustainable health care for all citizens.

Other Project Activities Covered

The project will also develop and implement a national Electronic Health Record (EHR) at a cost of $3.3M USD. This is currently in progress and is expected to be completed in September 2026.

New Amsterdam General Hospital Campus
The New Amsterdam General Hospital Campus is a state-of-the-art facility currently under development, designed to enhance healthcare delivery in the region. With a total capacity of 230 beds, the hospital is equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic imaging services, including MRI, CT Scan, X-ray, Mammography, and Ultrasound. The facility will feature a modern Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) for advanced cardiac care, as well as five operating theaters, one of which is dedicated specifically to maternity and delivery services. Construction began on April 10, 2024, and is expected to be completed by April 9, 2027. Upon completion, this hospital will serve as a critical hub for comprehensive, high-quality healthcare in the region.

West Demerara General Hospital

The West Demerara General Hospital will be constructed at a cost of $10 billion GY and it is located in Region 3.

New Amsterdam General Hospital Campus
