Cervical cancer is a cancer that’s found anywhere in the cervix (the entrance to the uterus from the vagina). It is the fourth most common cancer in women and is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). In 2018, an estimated 570,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and about 311 000 women died from the disease.
In Guyana, it is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among our women. Recognising that this type of cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively, the Government of Guyana in 2024, announced the launch of a nationwide cervical cancer screening programme for all eligible women. Women ages 21-45 from any of the 10 administrative regions can uplift vouchers valued at GY$8000 and get screened at any of the sites approved by the MOH.
