Sub-programmes
1. Expanded Programme on immunization (EPI): provides vaccines for children and adults.
2. Reproductive Family Health Services: Contraceptive and advice on family planning is provided at all levels of the health care delivery system.
3. Women’s Health: More attention would be placed on the issues affecting women’s health.
4. Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV: All mothers enrolling in Antenatal Clinics (ANC) are offered the HIV test as part of their care. Rapid testing of ANC mothers is also done on the labour and postnatal wards for those mothers who did not have HIV testing done.
5. Safe motherhood strategy aims to reduce the deaths and illnesses of women, children and families through a comprehensive approach commencing before pregnancy.
6. Health care of the adolescent and youths by creating adolescent/youth friendly services.
7. Specialized Paediatric and obstetric care which is provided at some regional hospitals and the National Referral Hospital. Medical services are also provided at some health facilities and the hospitals.
8. Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI): a holistic approach to child health which involves assessment, classification, identifying the problem, treatment, follow up and referral of patient. Health workers are taught the basic skills at all levels of care.
9. Community IMCI- the community is taught on basic health care and how to prevent illnesses in the home and the community.
10. HIV component of child health has also been included in the assessment of IMCI.
