Key Achievements
- There are 190 Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission sites across all 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana.
- Under the Expanded Programme on Immunization, the Ministry of Public Health has been able to achieve a vaccination coverage of over 90% of all antigens given to the under five (5) population.
- In 2014, Guyana placed 3rd out of 74 countries for effective management of vaccines.
- Seventy-five percent (75%) of all medical practitioners have been trained in ALARMS (Emergency Obstetrics Training).
- Over the past five years, 90% of births have been occurring in Health institutions, indicating a reduction in home births.
- At least 60% of primary healthcare professionals have been trained in Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses.
- In collaboration with the Guyana Help the Kids (GHTK) Charity, we have opened six Neon-natal Intensive Care Units (NICU’s) across the country – Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), West Demerara Regional Hospital, Bartica Regional Hospital, Suddie Regional Hospital, New Amsterdam Regional Hospital and the Linden Hospital Complex.
- Under the Expanded Programme on Immunization, the Ministry currently administers vaccines for 17 antigens: Whooping Cough, Measles, Poliomyelitis, Tuberculosis, Yellow Fever, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Mumps, Rubella, Haemophilus Influenza Type b, Hepatitis B, Pneumococcal, Meningococcal, Human Pappiloma Virus, Varicella, Rota Virus and Pertussis.
