Cervical Cancer Screening Programme

The Cervical Cancer Screening Voucher Programme is a national public health initiative implemented by the Ministry of Health to expand access to screening services and promote the early detection of Cervical Cancer among women across the country. Launched on June 21, 2024, the programme forms part of the Government of Guyana’s broader efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare and improve women’s health outcomes.Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related illness and death among women in Guyana. However, it is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer when detected early through regular screening. The Cervical Cancer Screening Voucher Programme was therefore introduced to reduce financial barriers and encourage more women to access screening services.

Programme Overview

Under the initiative, eligible women receive a government-issued voucher that subsidises the cost of cervical cancer screening. The voucher, valued at $8,000, covers the cost of testing for Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the virus responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases, as well as other screening procedures used to detect abnormal cervical cells.
The programme specifically targets women between the ages of 21 and 65, the age group most at risk of developing cervical abnormalities that may lead to cervical cancer.
VOUCHERS ARE AVAILABLE AT ALL HEALTH CENTRES COUNTRYWIDE.

Accessing the Voucher

Eligible women can collect their Cervical Cancer Screening Voucher from any health centres across Guyana. After receiving the voucher, individuals may present it at approved screening centres, laboratories, or participating healthcare providers to undergo cervical cancer screening.
This system allows women to access services through private healthcare providers, increasing the availability of screening services throughout the country.

Partnerships and Service Delivery

The programme is implemented through strategic partnerships between the Ministry of Health and a network of approved private laboratories and healthcare providers. These collaborations help ensure that cervical cancer screening services are available across multiple regions, allowing women to access timely and reliable diagnostic testing.
By working with both public and private sector partners, the programme strengthens national capacity for cervical cancer prevention while expanding access to essential screening services throughout the country.

Importance of Early Detection

Screening plays a critical role in identifying HPV infections and abnormal cervical cell changes before they develop into cervical cancer. When detected early, these abnormalities can be treated effectively, preventing the progression of the disease.
Through the Cervical Cancer Screening Voucher Programme, thousands of women across Guyana have gained improved access to screening services. Early detection has allowed many women to receive timely follow-up care and treatment, significantly improving health outcomes.

Follow Up Care and Treatment

If precancerous cells or other abnormalities are detected during screening, the patient is referred to a public health facility for further evaluation, monitoring, and appropriate medical treatment.
